Tax season

Tax season, minus the panic.

Tax time doesn't have to be a shoebox-and-stress situation. Start gathering now, know your dates, and give your refund a plan before it lands.

One thing up front: Pennies into Dreams is an educational shop, not a tax service. Everything here helps you get organized — for advice about your own situation, talk to a licensed tax professional.

Start now

The start-now checklist

Five small things you can do before a single form arrives — they'll save you hours later.

Step 1

Make one home for every tax paper

Pick one folder — a real paper folder, a big envelope, or a folder on your phone. Every time a tax paper arrives in the mail or your inbox, it goes straight in. No hunting through drawers in April.

Step 2

Know which forms to expect

Make a list of what's coming: a W-2 from each job, 1099s for side income, gig apps, and bank interest, and an SSA-1099 if you receive Social Security. When a form on your list hasn't shown up, you'll know to go looking for it.

Step 3

Wait for the real forms

Don't file with your last pay stub. Pay stubs can be missing income or flat-out wrong, and filing with one can mean fixing your return later. Employers and banks generally send the official forms by the end of January — they're worth the short wait.

Step 4

Give your refund a job before it arrives

Decide what your refund will do before it's sitting in your account: starter emergency fund first, then the smallest debt, then a goal you're excited about. A refund with a plan is money that changes your year. Our Tax Season Organizer has a Refund Game Plan page that walks you through it.

Step 5

Know that real free help exists

If you can't afford a tax preparer, you may not need one. The IRS runs free filing software and free in-person help for households that qualify — the official links are right below. No upsells, no "refund advance" fees.

Free official help

Real help, straight from the IRS — free

These are the official IRS pages. Bookmark them here, or type irs.gov into your browser yourself.

IRS Free File

File free with guided software

Brand-name tax software that walks you through your return step by step — free if your income is under the yearly limit shown on the IRS page. It does the math and checks for common deductions and credits.

VITA · Free in-person help

Free tax help near you

VITA offers free basic return preparation by IRS-certified volunteers. The IRS does not set one national income limit, and local sites may set their own; many sites serve people who generally make about $70,244 or less, people with disabilities, and taxpayers with limited English. Use the IRS locator to confirm the site near you.

Where's My Refund

Track your refund

Filed already? Check your refund status with the IRS's official tracker. You'll need your Social Security number, your filing status, and the exact refund amount from your return.

IRS Payments

If you owe instead

Owing isn't the end of the world — but ignoring it is expensive. Pay directly from your bank account for free, or set up a monthly payment plan on the IRS's official payments page.

Stay safe

One rule that protects you

Always go to irs.gov yourself — type it into your browser instead of trusting a link in a text or email. The IRS never calls, texts, or messages you demanding payment or threatening arrest. Anyone who does is running a scam: hang up, don't click, and don't send gift cards or wire money, ever.

Key dates

Key dates to know

The rhythm of tax season

  • Filing season usually opens in late January — that's when the IRS starts accepting returns.
  • The federal filing deadline is usually in mid-April. If it falls on a weekend or holiday, it shifts to the next business day.
  • Quarterly estimated payments have their own dates through the year — if you freelance, do gig work, or have side income, those are yours to track. The Tax Season Organizer has a fillable tracker page for them.

Exact dates change from year to year, so always confirm this year's dates at irs.gov before you rely on them.
